Dragons are mentioned often in our culture. They are usually seen as a made-up animal like a unicorn. People think it’s fun to have stories about them, but knows they aren’t real. Or are they? We know the Bible talks about Satan as a dragon (Revelation 12:3-4). There’s no doubt it is referencing him because he is also called the ancient serpent, the devil and Satan (Revelation 12:7-9). Is this ‘dragon’ description literal language, or just something symbolic?
Job refers to a Behemoth (Job 40:15-19), an animal that must have been a type of dinosaur, specifically a Sauropod. It couldn’t have been a hippo or elephant for it has a tail that “sways like a cedar” (Job 40:17). The book of Job also describes people as walking with both the Leviathan and the behemoth, so clearly they were alive during Job’s lifetime.
The Leviathan is once again mentioned in the Book of Psalms. Psalm 74:14 tells us, “It was you who crushed the heads of Leviathan and gave it as food to the creatures of the desert.” The best explanation of these large animals is that they are some type of dragon.
There is much evidence of dragons outside the Bible, throughout the earth. Many cultures have strong traditions, drawings and artwork depicting dragons.
We know that God has created amazing creatures, therefore, we cannot limit His greatness. Dragons are magnificent creatures and are wise according to ancient texts. It would be amazing to see a dragon. Just because we never see something with our eyes does not mean it does not exist. Dragons are mentioned in the Bible many times, with some references referring to Satan and some referring to the Leviathan. It would stand to reason that God would pick the largest, greatest, most fearsome animal ever created to be an example of Satan. Satan himself, wanting to be greater than anyone else, would certainly encourage people to see him as a dragon. And just as many today deny the existence of dragons, they also deny the existence of Satan. What a perfect way for him to hide in plain sight! Just encourage others to think you don’t exist.
But Satan does exist. And so do dragons. Yet Jesus is greater than Satan or dragons and we are safe in Him!
