In the previous blog I talked about how to recognize when you facing a spiritual attack. Now we’ll talk about what to do when they come.
Ephesians 6, after explaining the reality of spiritual warfare, offers some excellent advice about how to protect ourselves from evil and defeat it. Ephesians 6:13 says we are to “Therefore put on the full armor of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything, to stand.” That armor includes the belt of truth around our waist, the breastplate of righteousness, our feet fitted with the readiness of peace, the shield of faith, the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God (v. 14-17). Quote Scripture. Pray Scripture. Our words are weak, but God’s Word has authority demons must obey (Mark 5:6-13). Memorize Scripture and use them. The sword is our only offensive weapon, our way to victory.
God gives us these pieces of armor when we become believers. His word is living and active (Hebrews 4:12), and our belief and faith in Jesus not only ensures our salvation, but enables the Holy Spirit to live within us. The Spirit is strong and is able to fight all battles for the glory of God. All of this we have with us at all times. All we must do is understand and believe, then equip ourselves with the tools God already provides.
When Jesus was tempted, He quoted Scripture to have victory over Satan’s temptations. Paul says our only offensive weapon is the sword of the Spirit, the Word of God (Ephesians 6:17). Psalm 119:9,11 tell us that it’s through God’s Word that we have victory. When the enemy attacks your mind with unholy thoughts use Scripture to have victory. Ask God to give you some verses that will help against your attacks, write them down and memorize them. Say them over and over when the thoughts attack you. That is the only way to victory, and God guarantees it will work!
Communicating with God by talking to Him and listening to Him is essential to have victory in spiritual warfare. Our battles are won or lost in prayer. Prayer in faith is powerful (Mark 11:24; James 5:16; Ephesians 6:18). When we pray in the name of Jesus, we can trust that God hears us and responds. We’re told that we’re to seek, ask, and knock, and God will provide (Matthew 7:7), that if we have but the faith of a tiny mustard seed, we can move mountains through the power of the Lord (Matthew 17:20-21). Also consider Biblical fasting as you pray. This means abstaining from something, usually food, for a period of time so you can use that time to focus on God and His Word instead of your physical needs.
Finally, don’t face your battles alone. God gave us each other to help, encourage, lift up and support each other (1 Corinthians 12:12-14). Together, we are one in Him. Reach out for help when you need it. God often answers our prayers and meets our needs through other believers.
You probably didn’t think you were entering a war zone when you put your faith in Jesus, but when you left Satan’s camp and entered God’s you made an enemy for life. At salvation we may think our battles will be over, but in reality they are just beginning. At least now we are fighting from a position of victory behind the One who has already defeated all our enemies. Persevere in following Him and ultimate victory will be yours.
Ephesians 6:12 , “For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms.”
On a scale of 1 to 10, how would you rate your battle readiness for spiritual warfare? Where are you the strongest? Where are you the weakest (you need to know this because Satan knows it)?
“SPIRITUAL WARFARE HANDBOOK” covers all the basic information you need to know in order to have victory in your spiritual battles. “SPIRITUAL WARFARE AND THE BIBLE,” my second book on Spiritual Warfare, goes into more detail by looking at all the verses in the Bible that deal with our battle with Satan.
