Have you ever wished you could talk to God and ask Him a questions about something He is (or isn’t) doing? I’ve heard people say that when they get to heaven they have some things they’d like God to explain. Well, guess what? When we stand in the presence of the Almighty King of Kings and Lord of Lords on His throne, we won’t feel at all like grilling Him about what we think He did (or didn’t) do.
Still, what might God’s answer be if we could question Him in this life about something we didn’t understand? We know God is good and gracious, and He would answer if we would listen to what He says. I can’t speak for God – but these would probably be some of the things He would say:
“I did it because I love you.” We know God loves us too much to do anything than what is best for us, what we would want done if we knew everything He knows. Suppose God would have given you everything you thought you wanted over the years? What would your life be like? Do you give your children everything they want? Of course, not – you love them too much! So does our Heavenly Father. The worst thing that ever happened (Jesus on the cross) turned out to be the best thing that ever happened – our salvation. God knows what He is doing. He promises that what happens is for our good and His glory (Romans 8:28).
“I have something better for you.” Be honest, when God doesn’t do what we want, we think we will end up with second best. Do we really believe we know better than God? When we do something our children don’t like or understand, we know that what we are doing is better for them than what they wanted (Matthew 7:11). We need them to trust us; to know we have their best long-term interests in mind. Perhaps God is wanting to do something better for you in the long run. Trust Him. Even if He doesn’t do what we think is best, even if we don’t understand, even if He won’t explain or give us reasons to trust Him. His thoughts are not our thoughts; they are much greater than our thoughts (Isaiah 55:8-9).
“I’m keeping you safe.” Many times, we say “No” to our children because we are protecting them from unseen dangers or temptations (Psalm 71:15). God might allow something in your life that you don’t like because it is keeping you from something really destructive. He knows our weaknesses and our areas of temptation. He knows we need help with our priorities and goals. It may seem like He is keeping good from us but instead He is protecting us from bad.
“Be patient, I know what I’m doing.” We want to see the end result immediately, but God doesn’t do things on our timing. God promises He doesn’t withhold anything good from those who follow Him (Psalm 84:11). We just have to be patient and trust Him in the long run. Just like we want our children to trust us because one day they will understand. God’s first priority in our life isn’t to give us what we want when we want it, but to have us grow spiritually (James 1:2-4). God knows we don’t grow without trials and difficulties which stretch and deepen our faith. Our goal for us is to have a happy, easy life now. His purpose is to have us grow to be more like Jesus (Romans 8:29). Sometimes the answer to “Why” is simply because God wants to make you more like Jesus.
TRUSTING GOD Can you trust the God whom you have questioned? The Bible says that without faith it is impossible to please God (Hebrews 13:6). We trust that His “no,” “wait” or even silence is what is best for us because He loves us and knows the future. Thank Him for working for your eternal good instead of just your temporary satisfaction and ease. Thank Him for using these things to make you more like Jesus. Affirm your faith in Him and His perfect will for you. Thank Him for being a good, loving, all-knowing and always present God who never lets us down. Remember that nothing will enter your life without going through His loving hands first.
Hebrews 13:6 “Without faith it is impossible to please God.”
Are you questioning anything that God is doing (or not doing) in your life right now? Which of the above answers do you think He would give you? Thank Him for His faithfulness and reaffirm your faith in Him.
