SIGNS AND WONDERS TODAY
God speaks to His people in many ways: by His Spirit, in the Word, through others and by circumstances to name a few. His Spirit convicts, His people proclaim His truth, nature reveals His awesome greatness, He uses the ‘hole in our heart’ to show only He can fill it. One of the ways He still speaks to everyone is through signs and wonders. When evangelical Christians hear that term they often label it as Pentecostal and tune the rest out. But the Bible does talk about signs and wonders. We need to avoid the extremes of totally denying them or of fixating on them above all other things in life. Let’s see what the Bible says and find Biblical balance as we apply these things to these last days.
God used signs and wonders to soften Pharoah’s heart during the time of Moses. A series of plagues and miracles followed as God battled with Satan for control of the Jewish nation. With the death of the firstborn God won (Exodus 7:8-11).
Throughout their history, God used signs and wonders to get the Jews’ attention and cause them to turn to Him. “God has set signs and wonders in the land of Egypt, even unto this day, both in Israel and among all nations” (Jeremiah 32:20). The prophet Daniel saw signs and wonders that included visions of “beasts,” which he interpreted to accurately predict future political schemes and kings’ military actions after the Babylonian captivity. And the prophet Joel predicted that in the last days, “It will come about after this that I will pour out My Spirit on all mankind; And your sons and daughters will prophesy, your old men will dream dreams, your young men will see visions” (Joel 2:28-32).
Signs and wonders are meant to build faith, encourage obedience and showcase God’s power and love. We see that over and over in the life of Jesus. A star led the wise men to where Jesus was born. Angels proclaimed His birth. What greater sign than being born of a virgin? Jesus’ life and ministry was marked by healings, deliverance from demons, changes in nature (water to wine, calming storms, walking on water, etc.), even bringing dead people back to life. These were Jesus’ “calling cards” to prove He was God (John 14:11-12).
This continued in the New Testament as well. In Acts 4:30, Paul wrote, “By stretching forth your hand to heal; and that signs and wonders may be done by the name of Jesus.” Prophets and apostles were aware of the signs and miracles that displayed God’s and Jesus’ presence in the world“
When God works, Satan counterfeits. “For there shall arise false Christs, and false prophets, and shall show great signs and wonders; insomuch that, if it were possible, they shall deceive the very elect” (Matthew 24:24). Remember that the Pharaoh’s magicians were able to perform the first three wonders Moses performed in Exodus (Exodus 7:11-12; 2 Timothy 3:8)
The book of Revelation describes many astounding signs and wonders to come in the future. Ravenous beasts rise from the sea and land. An “abyss” eventually holds Satan. The sea turns to blood. Fire, smoke, and sulfur kill people. It does not look good for those that God deems sinners. Yet those who have put their faith in them have nothing to fear. In fact, we are to rejoice because these signs show His return is near (Luke 22:27-28).
How near? Matthew 24 and Luke 21 talk about wars, famines, earthquakes, disease, epidemics and the rise of false prophets. We can’t know the exact day He will return but will know the general time, like a woman progressing through labor (Matthw 24:6-8, 36). Those things and others are taking place today but people aren’t responding to God because of them. Not everyone responded positively to God’s signs and wonders. Pharoah rejected them, as did the religious rulers in Jesus’ day. The same is true today.
It is wrong and dangerous to place too much credence on signs and wonders, for our faith is in God, not in His actions. Needing supernatural, extraordinary events to increase faith in God comes from weak faith. But totally ignoring any supernatural work of God in the world or in our lives is also wrong. God reaches out to each person, believer or unbelievers, in special ways to get attention, reveal Himself and convey His truth. Things happen in our lives that are not by chance but are by His design. Some may be good and others seem bad at the time. A sign of God’s presence may come through another person being at the right place at the right time to help us in a time or need. A medical person can give encouragement just when it is needed most. God can put thoughts of hope and peace in your mind when you need them. He showers us with blessings which are clear signs of His love and awareness of us. Occurrences that seem too good to be true make us realize that amid life’s chaos, God watches out for us, leading us with awesome signs of his love.
In what supernatural ways has God worked in your life? Thank Him for each of them.
Pause and let God show you other ways He has been reaching out to you with signs and wonders.
How is He communicating to you currently? What is He conveying to you? Listen and thank Him.
Pray for those you know who are struggling, that they may be open to the ways God is now working in their lives and circumstances.
