Someone recently emailed me this question: “I’m requesting prayer. I’ve got major anxiety and insomnia. How do I know if I’m under spiritual attack or if it’s just the fact that I’m under too much stress and hit my breaking point?”
Here’s my answer: “Thanks for writing. That’s a great question. The first thing I’d suggest is to pray and ask God to help you understand the source of your anxiety and insomnia. Ask Him to show you how to have victory over this by getting to the root of the problem and not just dealing with symptoms.
“Work against each alternative as if it is the problem and see which brings results. It is probably a combination of both woven together so dealing with both issues would be good. Demons work against us where there is already a weakness. They use it as an opening to attack and try to enlarge it. The more we allow it to grow the worse it becomes.
“DEFEAT STRESS AND ANXIETY by making changes to your schedule and your attitude to it so it don’t overwhelm you. Fear is usually behind these things – not getting everything done or not getting it done right. We fear it will be too much for us or God will give us more than we can handle. The more insecure and perfectionistic we are the worse that fear becomes. Remember God won’t give you more than you can handle with His help (1 Corinthians 10:13). Memorize that verse. Claim God’s promises and realize that when you are following Him things can get bad but not beyond your breaking point. Your strength is in Him.
“What is the cure for anxiety? Philippians 4 spells it out. 1. Praise God no matter what (v. 4). We know in our mind God loves us and does everything for our best, it is just our emotions that say differently. Which should be go by? Our minds, of course! Knowing God loves and cares for us no matter what is certainly something to praise Him for (1 Thessalonians 5:16-18)!. 2. Keep your poise at all times (v. 5a). “Gentleness” in v. 5 means moderation, balance, stability, maturity, self-control. Let your mind explain reality to your emotions. Don’t let your feelings run your life, but have self-control to have your mind run things. 3. Pray to God about it (v. 6). Take any and every anxiety to God and leave it there! 4. Rely on God’s perfect peace (v. 7). Don’t look to circumstance to give you peace, trust God to give it to you despite circumstances. 5. Think about positive, good things (v. 8). Get mentally tough. Only let thoughts God would want you to have take up residence in your mind. 6. Focus on Godly behavior (v. 9). Make sure there is no sin, however small or unrelated it seems, in your life. 7. Focus on others, not yourself (v. 10). Don’t be self-centered. 8. Be content in whatever circumstance God has you (v. 11-12). We don’t have to be anxious; God has provided a way out. Read Philippians 4 over and over, for there you’ll find the key to victory over your anxiety.
“Remember, fear takes root when we choose to focus on circumstances instead of God. Peter walking on water is a good example. When his eyes were on Jesus, his faith was strong, but when he focused on the waves they grew in his mind to be greater than Jesus’ power and he started sinking. He did the right thing, though, and put his eyes back on Jesus.
“DEFEAT ANYTHING DEMONIC by praying against it and taking back its access. Fear is one of Satan’s biggest weapons. Demons are often behind and use fear (Romans 8:15). If it takes the form of insecurity, anxiety, worry, preoccupation with problems, or whatever, it is still fear. Demons put fear of David into Saul (1 Samuel 18:10-15) and put fear and terror into Eliaphaz by gliding by his face (Job 4:14-15). Anything not of faith is sin (Romans 14:23). God does not give us fear (2 Timothy 1:7; Romans 8:15), so if you experience fear realize it is not from God but from Satan. This doesn’t mean it is always through demonizing, for you can be attacked with fear without being demonized.
“God allows demonizing for a reason, and in this case it could be to get you to face any fears in your life and learn to deal with them by trusting in Him. Ephesians 6:12 “For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms.”
