In the last blog we looked at proofs showing that salvation cannot be lost. We looked at Bible passages that assure us of this and how Greek language supports this as well. Let’s look at some more proof of eternal security.
ALL INVOLVED IN SALVATION PROVES IT IS SECURE. Everything in salvation is by God. Man doesn’t do anything to earn or deserve it so there is nothing he can do to lose it. To receive salvation we simply stop rejecting the free gift God makes available.
Some have counted up to 210 thing that happen at the moment of salvation. The Bible says we are: Reconciled, Redeemed, Forgiven, Seated with Jesus, a Son of God, Born Again , Regenerated, Adopted, Accepted, Righteous, Justified, Sanctified, Free From Satan’s Control, A Holy Priesthood, Given Access God, A Citizen of Heaven, Baptized, Sealed and Indwelt by the Holy Spirit and many more. Why would we be given all that now if there was a chance of losing it? Why not wait until we really had salvation, which then wouldn’t be until death.
Sin, disobedience, unfaithfulness and disbelief in a believer’s life result in lost opportunities for eternal reward, but not lost salvation.
When we sin, we are told to “confess” the sin (1 John 1:9). Nowhere are we told to be “resaved.”
God disciplines believers in sin, but they are still believers and still called His children (Hebrews 12:6-11; Proverbs 3:11-12).
All Christians are part of the Body of Christ (1 Corinthians 12:27). A body doesn’t just lose parts and then get the back again. Body parts are created to be permanent.
The Bible states that all Christians are free from the power of sin (Romans 6:14) even though we aren’t free from the presence of sin. Sin no longer has dominion or mastery over us.
God foreknew, elected, predestined, chose and called us (Romans 8:29-30; Ephesians 1:4-5). Yes, we have a free will, but the Bible makes it clear that without God working in us we wouldn’t come to Him. He gets the credit, not us. If we couldn’t bring ourself to Him without His asistance, how can He expect us to keep ourself with Him?
Many times the Bible says we are “in Christ” (2 Corinthians 5:17; Romans 8:1; Galatians 3:27-28; Ephesians 1:3-4) and “Christ in you” (Colossians 1:26-27). We are part of Him as members of His Body and part of His Bride. These are permanent positions, not conditional possibilities dependent on our faithfulness and perseverance.
We are told to not grieve the Spirit (Ephesians 4:30) or quench the Spirit (1 Thessalonians 5:19) by sin. The Bible says our sin impacts our openness to the Spirit working in us, not that the Spirit leaves and we need to start over again.
OLD & NEW TESTAMENT EXAMPLES. All the pictures and illustrations of salvation in the Bible show it is secure.
Noah built an ark for protection from judgment and covered it with “pitch” (the Hebrew word for “atonement”). God shut the door and secured them safely inside. It wasn’t something they had to shut and then hold it shut. Afterwards Noah got drunk and sinned but was still a believer (Hebrews 11:7).
Jews bitten by a snake in the wilderness had only to look at the snake lifted up (a picture of Jesus) to have the poison removed (John 3:14-15). It never came back, even after they stopped looking.
Lot had sin in his life. He even impregnated his own daughters (Genesis 19:1-38). Yet he is referred to as “righteous Lot” in 2 Peter 2:7-8. Samson was a terrible failure in life but is listed in the role of heroes of the faith in Hebrews 11:34. They were clearly carnal believers (1 Corinthians 3:1-3). If salvation could be lost, then those who are carnal would have lost their salvation but they are still believers, just living by the flesh instead of the Spirit. Others who are labeled as part of the Body of Christ but are in sin are in Rome (Romans 7:14; 12:1; 2:16), Corinth (1 Corinthians 3:1-3; etc.), and other churches. Paul told churches to correct sinning believers or God would, but they were still believers. Even Annias and Saphira (Acts 5), who were seen by Peter and the church as believers in Jesus, were disciplined for their sin but there is no mention or warning of them losing their salvation.
The New Testament refers to salvation as being “born again,” “adoption” and “sonship.” Those things can’t be undone. One can’t be unborn or born out of their family. Sonship can be denied but not undone. Adoption is not conditioned on the one being adopted doing anything to keep their adoption.
Salvation is a gift freely given (Ephesians 2:8-9). There is nothing required but receiving it and no condition whereby the giver would take it back. If it is a free gift, there is nothing that can be done to reject it unless the giver wants it back and God doesn’t (John 10; Romans 8).
The prodigal son rejected the father but was still a son and the father never rejected him (Luke 15:11-32) but accepted him back. He was always his father’s son even though the closeness was broken.
Peter denied Jesus 3 times (Matthew 26:69–75) but Jesus forgave and reinstated him (John 21:15-23). He didn’t have to be “resaved” or born again a second time. Fellowship was broken but the relationship remained.
Individual Greek words and Bible verses, as well as descriptions of salvation and the overall teaching of what salvation entails all combine to show conclusively that salvation is secure eternally. Those who oppose “once saved always saved” point out that it can be used as an excuse to sin after salvation, to take advantage of God’s grace and forgiveness. That is true, but God is a God of grace. Salvation is freely given, received and lived out by grace. We are not under law and are not to put ourselves under law, which is what happens when we try to keep our salvation by our deeds. Replacing grace with a system of do’s and don’ts places the emphasis on us and our works. Fear replaces love as a motivating force. We are free in Christ. Following Jesus to keep from losing salvation is not living in liberty but in bondage (Galatians 5:1, 2 Corinthians 3:17, Romans 8:1-2, and John 8:36).
