CAN SOMEONE PLACE A CURSE ON ME?
The short answer to the question, “Can someone place a curse on me?”, is yes, THEY CAN TRY. When we think of cursing someone we think of witchcraft and Voodoo, of sticking pins in dolls or casting spells. However, putting a curse on someone is much more than that. Voodoo, witchcraft and placing spells is strictly forbidden under penalty of death in the Bible (Deuteronomy 18:10-12). Why would God take such harsh measures if there was no reality in it? In fact, curses can and do happen, and not just in some jungle in Africa. They happen here and they happen to us.
Anyone who hates another person or who wishes harm on someone is actually cursing them. Their strong negative feelings act like a prayer for evil to happen. Demons hear those ‘prayers,’ they do all they can to make them happen. These curses made in some way empower demons to bring the things about. As Christians, we know nothing can separate us from God’s love (Romans 8:37-39) and that God is greater than Satan and his forces (1 John 4:4). But that doesn’t mean we are free from attack (Ephesians 6:10-17; 1 Peter 5:8-9).
The word “curse” appears almost 200 times in the Bible. It is a reality we must face. God Himself cursed Satan for tempting Adam and Eve into sin (Genesis 3:17). He indirectly cursed all mankind when He cursed the ground so that weeds would sprout and man would work hard and sweat profusely in order to make a living from the cursed earth (Genesis 3:17-19). In Genesis 4:10-12, God placed a curse upon Cain for killing his brother. All of these curses were well deserved. The Bible also records many times when God placed blessings on those who obeyed Him (Deuteronomy 27-30, esp. 28). When we curse someone, we wish for something bad to happen to them. God’s curses were punishment for disobedience.
Most of the curses in the Bible involve one person putting a curse on another person. Noah cursed his son Ham when Ham peeked at him while he was drunk and naked (Genesis 9:18-27). Shimei cursed and spit on David as David was fleeing Jerusalem ahead of Absalom’s army of rebellion. Shimei was upset because David took over the Kingship from the family of Saul (2 Samuel 16:5-8 and1 Kings 2:32-46). Joab wanted to kill Shimei on the spot; but, David stopped him by admitting that the curse was deserved. Also, Job’s wife tried to get Job to curse God and die (Job 2:9; 19:17). Satan prompted this. It was an attempt to place a curse on God so God would discipline Job with death and he suffering would end.
Satan would put a curse on everyone who follows God if he could. He would have us dead if possible, but God doesn’t allow it (Job 1:10). He puts it in the hearts of those he controls to hate God’s people and wish for harm to come to them, in other words, to curse them (us). He does this against churches and other ministries that serve God as well.
What can we do to protect ourselves against curses? First, make sure there is no sin in your life for sin is an open door for demons to attack. Make sure you live a faithful, holy life so you don’t deserve a curse coming against you (Proverbs 26:2). Also, wear the armor of God all day every day (Ephesians 6:10-17). That means to live a holy life (breastplate) keeping all your thoughts under control (helmet) while living by faith (shield), in peace (sandals) and following God’s truth (belt). Know and quote God’s Word whenever tempted (sword of the Spirit).
If you know of someone who has something against you, pray for them as Jesus instructed (Luke 6:28). If we are angry at someone we open ourselves to God’s judgment (Matthew 5:22). If you feel someone has something against you or has cursed you in any way, flee to the cross and ask Jesus to protect you from it (Galatians 3:13). Curses are not just something done somewhere else, nor are they something to fear. We must understand them and the power of Jesus to protect us from them.
Galatians 3:13 Christ redeemed us from the curse of the law by becoming a curse for us, for it is written: “Cursed is everyone who is hung on a pole.”
Are strange, unexplained difficulties common in your life or ministry? Are you suspicious the enemy might be trying to work against you? Ask God to show you if someone has curses you, and if you have done anything to open yourself up to it. If so confess it. Then pray to have it broken in Jesus’ name.
