ANXIETY BUSTERS

ANXIETY BUSTERS
Do you ever feel anxious or stressed? Do you know anyone who does? I should ask if you know anyone who doesn’t, for it is a common affliction of mankind. The heroes of the Bible also had their battles with tension and worry. The Bible gives us some sure-fire anxiety busters, guaranteed to work every time. Like Peter walking on water, we do fine until we focus on our circumstances, then we go down (Matthew 14:22-33). But when we get our eyes back on Jesus we regain our spiritual balance and move ahead. “Fix your eyes on Jesus” (Hebrews 12:2) must be our motto. To help us do that, God has given us promises in the Bible to assure us that we have nothing to fear. Here are some for you to write out and carry with you so you can use them when needed.

Isaiah 26:3 “You will keep in perfect peace those whose minds are steadfast, because they trust in you.” Not just peace, but PERFECT peace is available when we have firm faith that God is in sovereign control and everything He does is for His glory and our good. God doesn’t promise to change circumstances so we have no challenges, but He does promise us He is in control of all that happens, even that which seems ‘bad’ to us. His sovereignty, omnipotence, omniscience, and so on are irrefutable truths that bring amazing peace. But steadfastness is key to the concept of peace. No matter what circumstances seem like, God is in control and will bring ultimate good out of it even if it itself is not good (Romans 8:28-29). He will use it to make us more like Jesus, and what could be better than that! What produces stress and anxiety in you? Why? If you truly believed God was in control and was ultimately doing what was best for you, how would that impact your anxiety? Learn to see your anxiety as a meter reading of how strong your faith is.

Romans 8:38–39 “For I am convinced that neither death nor life… nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.” One of Satan’s best weapons against us are his lies that God is withholding good from us, like he told Eve in Eden. He magnifies our challenges and minimizes God’s love and control of all things. If we know we are not separated from God’s love, then we know He will only allow what is best for us. After all, if He left heaven to come to earth to go to the cross for you before you even put faith in Him, why would He not now do what is best for you? Are you “convinced,” as Paul was, that nothing can separate you from God’s love and care? If you really believe it in your head it will translate into peace when facing stress and trials. Does it?

Psalm 94:19 “When anxiety was great within me, your consolation brought me joy.” God doesn’t just give victory over anxiety; He can replace it with joy when we let Him. That means we find peace in Him when we don’t have it in our situation. He brings consolation, not guilt, judgment or criticism for lack of faith. Even when we lose the battle with anxiety, His consolation is still available. When you can’t seem to shake anxiety, do you go to God anyway and ask Him to console you? He will!

Isaiah 41:10 “So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.” There are 5 promises in this verse. Can you find all of them? There are also two “do not” commands/conditions for us to meet. The promises help us meet them, but we must keep them by not giving into fear or discouragement (“be dismayed”). When we are weak, we are made strong by the Lord (2 Corinthians 12:1), and He holds us up. The first step is to recognize our weakness, the next is to turn to God for strength and not wallow in our inability to have victory on our own. When we admit we are unable, then we are open for Him to work in and through us. “When I am weak, then I am strong” (2 Corinthians 12:10). What makes you afraid? When do you get discouraged? Which of the 5 promises do you need to remember and use at those times?

1 Peter 5:7 “Cast all your anxiety on Him because He cares for you.” Think of throwing something disgusting and dangerous as far away from you as possible. Now apply that to your anxiety. In your mind throw it as far away as possible. Too often we leave it near us and keep watching it, as if somehow that will remove it. Throw it away. Throw it to Jesus so He can take it far from you. Then don’t go grabbing it back! What anxiety are you facing right now? Picture yourself throwing it far away, to Jesus Himself, and letting it go knowing He cares for you.

Matthew 6:34 “Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.” Corrie ten Boom—a survivor of the Holocaust and an amazing woman of faith—once told a story that occurred between her and her father. “Father sat down on the edge of the narrow bed. “Corrie,” he began gently, “when you and I go to Amsterdam—when do I give you your ticket?” I sniffed a few times, considering this. “Why, just before we get on the train.” “Exactly. And our wise Father in heaven knows when we’re going to need things, too. Don’t run out ahead of Him, Corrie.” (Corrie ten Boom, The Hiding Place: The Triumphant True Story of Corrie Ten Boom) This wisdom comes from this verse. Tomorrow is its own journey. Today is where you are at. Live this moment only, don’t try carrying tomorrow’s burdens with today’s strength. His grace is sufficient for now when we need it, not for future burdens we anticipate and try to handle ahead of time. What is your biggest fear about the future? Think of a time when your worry has helped you through anxiety? Think of a time when it hasn’t? What can you learn from that!

Scripture is full of many promises that can minister to an anxious heart. God doesn’t remove the source of the anxiety, but He does promise to help us through it right now, for this present moment is the only moment we have in life. We can’t live in the past or the future, although we may try to. It is often in our darkest moments that we feel God the closest. It is in our deepest hour that He is shaping us, molding us, and caring for us. So, while you seek to live a life of faith and strength, never forget that it lies solely in the hands of a gracious God—a God who has promised us peace.

“Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.” Philippians 4:6-7
Which of these verses do you need most right now? Write it down and keep it with you. Read it often. Memorize it. Each one is a sure-fire anxiety buster!
