I recently received a question that may apply to some of you who read this. Here is my answer. If you have a question I can answer in this blog please write me (Jerry@Schmoyer.net).
“My question is, what can I do for an adult son who is demonized and who is not professing Christ?” This is a very good question and I will do my best to answer it.
Since your son has not committed his life to Jesus, that is the most important issue and need in his life. He needs Jesus to get free from Satan’s influence and also from his own sin and eternal condemnation. Being free from demonizing is important, but salvation comes first and foremost. If a person is a believer then, as a child of God, God will discipline and work with them to bring them back to Him. But God will never force anyone against their free will, Christian or unbeliever.
Your son has a free will and God will not make him do what is right. God never forces anyone. Being demonized certainly blinds him and influences him in the wrong direction. But no matter how strong Satan’s influence is in someone, they still can choose to follow Jesus. We see that with the man with thousands of demons in Mark 5 who came and knelt before Jesus.
We can’t pray for God to force him to believe, but we can intercede for that person and pray for God’s mercy in his life. A parent, especially a father, has that authority in a special way. Pray that any demonic influence against him be bound temporarily so that he can clearly see the truth and respond to it. Ask God to have mercy and show him the truth of what he is knowingly or unknowingly involved with and how Satan is impacting him. Ask God to bind up the influences of the demons against him so he can see more easily his need of Jesus. Spiritual warfare is s truth encounter, not a power encounter. The truth is the only thing that will set him free.
If you see a sin pattern in him that is also present in someone else in the family or in ancestors, pray against that. If you are aware of what he might have done to open the door to demons in his life, pray against that also. Ultimately he will have to confess and turn from his own sin, but you can ask God to weaken the demon’s hold on him by praying against what might have let him in.
Then you must let him go and leave it between God and him. Find consolation in the fact that God loves him more than you do. He created him and gave him to you on temporary loan. Continue to show him the same love as Jesus shows you. Do not burn any bridges but, as much as you can, leave the lines open for communication between you. Demons are probably feeding him lies about you as well as about God to keep him in bondage. Ask God to break those lies and show him the truth. Show him love, not criticism or judgment. Don’t be surprised if he keeps away from you – darkness flees from light.
Remember, too, that Satan will use this to attack you and get at you. He will tell you it is your fault and try to discourage you and turn you from your faith. He wants you to question God. Or he will try to put anger in your heart and have you blame someone else for their influence on your son. Keep your eyes on Jesus and continue to grow through this for God will use this for your growth as well. Remember Romans 8:28-29. God uses all these things for our growth to make us more like Jesus.
While you must show love and acceptance to your son, do not do anything to enable him in his sin. Do not let him manipulate you in any way. Do not make excuses, bail him out of consequences, support him financially or anything else that would enable him to continue his current lifestyle. You must turn him over to God and let God do as he sees best. That often means things must get worse before they get better. Remember, God is interested in his future in heaven, not just in giving him an easy life on earth.
John 8:32 “Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.”
Is there someone close to you who is demonized and isn’t following Jesus? What have you learned from this blog that can help you?
