MEMORY VERSES FOR MARRIAGE

We memorize Bible verses for all kinds of subjects, but seldom do we focus on learning verses related to marriage. Yet, what better way to repair or grow your marriage then with the truths of God as revealed in Scripture? Here are some great verses to memorize so they come to mind just when you need them. These apply to all relationships, not just marriage. If you don’t have a mate they are still important to learn and apply. Memorizing them together during devotions with your mate, driving in the car or on a date will bring you closer to each other and to God’s ideal for your marriage. Here are some to use.
Ecclesiastes 4:12 “Though one may be overpowered, two can defend themselves. A cord of three strands is not quickly broken.” Two people can support and help each other. Two are better than one. A marriage will be much stronger if God is the center of the relationship. I illustrate this truth when training pastors by trying to braid 2 ropes together, which doesn’t work. I then add a third and they braid easily. God is the third, and is necessary to make a marriage work. Do you pray for your mate each day? Do you regularly pray together? What about studying the Bible together? When was the last time you had a heartfelt conversation about spiritual things and what God is currently doing in your life?
1 Corinthians 13:4-7 “Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.” These verses show what love in action looks like. Love is not just an emotion; it’s a deliberate choice and commitment. Patience means giving your spouse grace in their struggles, allowing them the time and space to grow. Kindness calls for intentionally choosing kind words and actions with each other, even during stressful situations. Choosing to rejoice in the truth involves being transparent and honest, which creates an environment where you both can trust each other well and where both of you feel safe being vulnerable. “Always protects” suggests a commitment to protecting your partner from all types of harm: physical, emotional, or spiritual. “Trusting” and “hoping” seeks the best for each other. Perseverance means being resilient and dealing with challenges together rather than apart. They can be summarized by the word grace – show grace to your mate the same as God shows grace to you. When you and your spouse try to live out these qualities, God will strengthen both your marriage and your character. What if God treated you in the exact same way you treat your mate? Would you like that? Which of these traits in 1 Corinthians 13 do you need to work on the most?
Philippians 2:3-4 “Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves, not looking to your own interests but each of you to the interests of others.” Selfishness comes naturally. Look at a baby and you’ll see selfishness in all they do. It doesn’t automatically stop with age. We learn how to get along socially. We learn by trial and error what is acceptable or unacceptable behavior, but we keep self-focus in our hearts. This verse tells us to focus on our mate’s needs, large and small, before our own. Understand their love language and use it every day. Ask God to make you aware of opportunities to serve your spouse, especially when it’s inconvenient and costs you something. After all, Jesus is our example, and look what it cost Him to show love for us? Our goal is to become more like Christ. By choosing humility and placing your spouse’s well-being above your own, you can help your marriage survive and thrive for a long time to come. When do you find it hardest to put your mate before yourself? What is God trying to teach you in these circumstances?
These are good verses to memorize to improve your marriage and help make you more like Jesus. Memorizing and applying key Bible verses as a couple can help you and your spouse enjoy a lasting marriage. By living out verses about important marriage qualities like humility, service, forgiveness, and kindness, you can grow closer to each other and God. It takes work and effort to memorize Scripture. Is your marriage worth it?
Genesis 2:24; Matthew 19:5; Mark 10:8; Ephesians 5:31 For this reason a man shall leave his father and his mother, and be joined to his wife; and they shall become one flesh.
Which of the above verses is most needed in your marriage at the present time? Write it out and memorize it.
Share it with your mate.
