I don’t think I need to convince you we are in a spiritual battle. Paul outlines our armor in Ephesians 6. However all but 1 piece of armor is defensive. They can protect us but not bring victory. The only weapon that drives back the enemy and defeats him is the sword of the Spirit, The Word of God (Ephesians 6:17). That’s how Jesus defeated Satan when tempted in the wilderness (Matthew 4:1-11). Praying God’s words back to Him, is a powerful weapon against the forces of evil. It is Truth going out. It reminds us that God knows our situation and understands what we face today. It builds our faith and our trust in God. It guards our hearts and focuses our minds back on Him. It wins the battle. Here are some passages you can memorize and quote when fighting for victory.
James 4:7 “Submit yourselves to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.” There are 2 conditions to this promise of victory: 1) submit to God and 2) resist Satan. Submitting means we acknowledge His authority and guidance in every area of life. This submission is essential in resisting the devil, who actively seeks to lead us away from God’s path, as he did with Eve. Resisting the devil means we actively oppose his schemes and temptations. When we do these, his influence weakens, and he is forced to flee. In essence, this verse highlights the importance of relying on God’s strength and authority to overcome spiritual challenges and stand firm against the forces of darkness. Do you reaffirm your commitment to submit to Jesus and His word each morning? Are you trying to resist on your own strength or do you turn to God as a last resort? How well does that work?
1 John 4:4 “You are from God, little children, and have overcome them; because greater is He who is in you than he who is in the world.” This important promise assures us God is the victor now and always. We are not victims of Satan and his demons. We are not helpless before them. God has overcome them and because we are united with Him eternally, then we have as well. By acknowledging the indwelling presence of God within us, we find the strength and assurance needed to stand firm, resist temptation and emerge victorious in the face of adversity. This verse is a source of hope and confidence, reminding us that we are not alone in the struggle against spiritual warfare but have the ultimate source of power on our side in the battle. Where do you have the most trouble believing God is greater than what you face? What fear most often attacks you?
2 Corinthians 10:3-5 “For though we live in the world, we do not wage war as the world does. The weapons we fight with are not the weapons of the world. On the contrary, they have divine power to demolish strongholds. We demolish arguments and every pretension that sets itself up against the knowledge of God, and we take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ.” Human enemies are fought with physical weapons or verbal statements. Those don’t work against demons. God gives us access to His powers and authority. Our unique arsenal empowers us to confront and dismantle arguments, ideologies, and any form of resistance that opposes the knowledge of God. We are called to take captive every thought, bringing it under the authority of Christ. Our battles in the spiritual realm require a distinct approach, one rooted in the authority of God and His Word. Through prayer, faith, and the guidance of the Holy Spirit, we have the ability to overcome strongholds and align our thoughts and actions with Christ, ultimately leading to victory in our spiritual warfare. How good are you at keeping all your thoughts away from wrong things but only focusing on Jesus? Which thoughts is it the hardest to prevent or conquer? What must you do to have victory in this?
1 Peter 5:8-9 “Be self-controlled and alert. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour. Resist him, standing firm in the faith.” Satan is sneaky, deceitful and deadly. He wants our destruction and will bring it about any way he can. We need to always be alert and careful, not giving in to any seemingly innocent sin. He baits his traps with good-lookingenticements. This reminds us of the importance of spiritual awareness and self-discipline in the face of spiritual warfare. Just as a watchful sentinel scans the horizon for danger, we too must be alert to the schemes of the enemy. By maintaining self-control and grounding ourselves in faith, we can effectively withstand the devil’s attacks. How alert are you to Satan’s tricks and traps? Do you keep giving in to the same sin? Where do you need more self-control or alertness?
Think of these verses as swords you can draw out to drive back fear, discouragement, oppression, temptation and whatever is attacking you. Mentally keep them ready to use by writing them somewhere you can easily see them. Better yet. Memorize them. Read or repeat them several times a day to keep them fresh and sharp for use.
