WORSHIP WINS BATTLES

WORSHIP WINS BATTLES

I do a lot of spiritual warfare counseling, especially online.  I’ve been doing so for almost 40 years.  One pattern I see with almost everyone who writes is a preoccupation with demonic work in their lives.  Demons love this, they want attention.  They accept it as worship and are empowered by it.  I know it can be hard to think of anything else when under attack, but when a person thinks of Satan and demons more than Jesus they won’t find the freedom they need.

Something else I often run into are people looking for a deliverance minister who can pray for them and bring instant freedom.  Spiritual warfare doesn’t work that way.  It is warfare – one battle after another.  God allows people to be attacked because He has important lessons for them to learn as they fight their way to victory.  God does use all things for the ultimate good of those who love Him (Romans 8:28).

There is a simple solution to both of these difficulties – worship.  We often talk about our weapons to battle demonic work (Ephesians 6):11-17), but often the tool of worship is left out.  It shouldn’t be. It is a key weapon of the utmost importance because it keeps our eyes on Jesus and not demons and it’s our best way to persevere in warfare.  Let’s talk about how to use our weapon of worship.

SAY ‘JESUS.’  His name has majesty and power.  There is no power in our name but all power is in His name.  You can call out His name for help, even just in your mind.  You can reverently say His name in worship.  You can think of Him, Who He is and all He does.  Recognizing Him and giving glory to Him, no matter what you are going through, is the best way to worship and to have victory in your battles.  His name is above every  name in heaven and earth (Ephesians 1:21), He has all authority (Matthew 28:18) and when He is for us nothing can prosper against us (Romans 8:31).

THOUGHTS OF PRAISE.  We are always to give thanks (1 Thessalonians 5:18), even if we don’t understand or like what is happening, because we know God is always in control and uses all things for our growth and His glory.  It’s easy to praise Him when things are going as we like, but to worship Him because of Who He is when all is falling apart is much more important.  Job did, and if he can do it so can we.  That was a key to his victory despite Satan’s terrible attacks on him and his family. We are commanded to “give thanks in all circumstances” (1 Thessalonians 5:18) so do so. As you keep an attitude of praise, which is the essence of worship, you are abiding in Him. Psalm 22:3 says God inhabits the praises of His people and is enthroned in our praises. When God is inhabiting the person of praise, Satan’s attacks can irritate but not penetrate. Keep your heart and mind set on thanking Him and you will be overcoming a spiritual attack with a weapon of praise.

SONGS OF PRAISE.  Sing or say Scripture out loud or in your mind.  Many praise songs and hymns are built around Scripture and they can be good as well.  Instead of giving attention to the demons who are attacking, focus it all on Jesus.   As you sing the scriptures you remind yourself of who you are in God’s eyes. For example, you are His beloved (Jeremiah 31:3), you are His friend (John 15:13-15), you are His adopted child (Romans 8:15), you are “His masterpiece” (Ephesians 2:10 NLT). When you quote scripture back to Satan, he trembles – and backs off – at the power of the word of God.  Keep Christian music playing in your home.  Demons hate it and it keeps Jesus foremost in your mind.

PRAY SCRIPTURE.  Worship isn’t just sitting in church singing on a Sunday morning, it’s what we do in private or in small groups the rest of the week.  Worship involves prayer, reading or listening to His word, quiet meditation or reflecting on God when outside in nature.  Take a passage of Scripture, perhaps a Psalm, and read it verse at a time.  After reading a verse, say it in your own words and personalize it in a prayer back to God.

According to Ephesians 1:20-23, God raised Jesus from the dead and “seated him at his right hand in the heavenly places, far above all rule and authority and power and dominion, and above every name that is named, not only in this age but also in the one to come. And he put all things under his feet and gave him as head over all things to the church, which is his body, the fullness of him who fills all in all.” Jesus Himself said in Matthew 28:18: “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me.” Praise Him for that authority, call upon Him and His authority, and realize the authority you have, in Him, as a believer. When you worship and remember Christ’s authority, you are also reminding yourself and Satan of Satan’s imminent defeat.  You aren’t empowering demons by giving them attention and you are fighting your battles so victory will come in God’s timing.  Use your battles as a reminder to worship.

Which of the above ways of worship works best for you?

Which can you start using to increase your worship, especially when attacked?

Spend some time worshipping God now, and continue throughout the day.
