God has never promised us freedom from Satan’s attacks, in fact He says the opposite (1 Peter 5:8; Ephesians 6:11-12; James 4:7; Matthew 5:11 “when” attacked, not “if” attacked). He doesn’t keep us from opposition but He helps us thorough it (Jeremiah 1:19). No general sends his soldiers into battle unprepared. Here are some weapons God provides for our use. But its up to us to learn how to skillfully use them.
THE WORD OF GOD. The Bible is our offensive weapon to defeat attacks against us (Ephesians 7:16). It’s what Jesus used to defeat Satan when He was confronted (Matthew 4:1-11). Our words don’t have power or authority but God’s Word does. “For the word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing to the division of soul and of spirit, of joints and of marrow, and discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart.” (Hebrews 4:12). Scriptures remind us of God’s promises and give examples of His past victories. They encourage us, feed us, train us and correct us when needed. “All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness,” (2 Timothy 3:16). The Word of God is a tremendous resource which we often neglect. When we do, we wonder why we are struggling.
THE BLOOD OF JESUS. We are victorious now because Jesus was victorious when He came to earth, died on the cross and rose again. Our lives are hidden in Christ with God. No enemy or obstacle can touch our souls. When we have been set free by the blood of Christ and the power of His sacrificial death on the Cross, we have a new identity in Him. We’ve been bought with a price, we are not our own, but covered by the grace and forgiveness of Jesus. We live victoriously against the attacks of spiritual warfare and no demon can ever separate us from the love of God which is in Christ our Lord. There is Power in the Name of Jesus. “And they overcame him because of the blood of the Lamb and because of the word of their testimony, and they did not love their life even when faced with death.” (Revelation 12:11). “For the word of the cross is folly to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God.” (1 Corinthians 1:18).
OBEDIENCE TO GOD. This is one we often forget and wonder why we aren’t moving ahead. We sometimes take advantage of God’s grace and forgiveness by taking our sin and disobedience lightly. Not doing something we should is as bad as doing something we shouldn’t do. Our sin nature within and the world without oppose our submission to and obedience of God. It’s a daily battle but one we can and must win. Lose this battle, even in “little things,” and nothing else will line up correctly. It’s the first domino that brings down the rest. “Submit yourselves, then, to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.” (James 4:7). “We destroy arguments and every lofty opinion raised against the knowledge of God, and take every thought captive to obey Christ,” (2 Corinthians 10:5).
THE HOLY SPIRIT. God Himself lives in us and gives us strength, wisdom, and discernment through His own Spirit to stay strong in the battle. He never leaves us to fend for ourselves and fight in our own strength. We need His fresh filling every day, we need the empowerment that only He can offer. Every believer has the gift of God’s Spirit dwelling within them. The same power that raised Lazarus from the dead, parted the sea, broke open prison doors, and caused the lame to walk, is the same powerful Spirit still alive and at work within us today, allowing us to stand firm in the presence of demonic opposition. “But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.” (Acts 1:8).
PRAYER. Communication is the key to victory in any conflict. A soldier who is not in contact with his commanding officer is left to fight on his own and the results are usually disastrous. God has given us prayer as the means of communicating with Him. Prayer is a great privilege as well as an awesome responsibility. God reminds us constantly in His word of the importance of prayer and the power that is found there. He tells us to pray without ceasing. No matter if you are in a time of battle or rest, prayer is important. A good soldier doesn’t stay in touch with his commander to tell the commander what to do but to be open for instructions as to what he is to do. Prayer isn’t us telling God what to do for us but making sure we are following what He wants us to do. The more we are attacked, the more we need to pray. Attacks aren’t a sign of failure, but of success for the enemy doesn’t bother those who aren’t bothering him! If he wants to stop you then you must be doing something right! “And pray in the Spirit on all occasions, with all kinds of prayers and requests. With this in mind, be alert and always keep on praying for all the saints.” (Ephesians 6:18). “…The effective prayer of a righteous man can accomplish much.” (James 5:16).
PRAISE. Praise invites God’s Presence. He dwells close to us when we praise Him (Psalm 22:3). Praise is a powerful weapon as well. It makes the enemy flee from battle. It pushes back the darkness that surrounds, and blocks the attacks and demonic lies thrown at us. Evil will not stick around if we’re praising our God, who will fight our battles for us. Praise is recognizing Who and what God is no matter the circumstances we are facing in life. Thanksgiving gives God our approval for something we like, but praise focuses totally on Him no matter what is happening to us. n the story of Jehoshaphat, we see God miraculously defeat the enemy, because of the people’s obedience to praise Him. “As they began to sing and praise, the Lord set ambushes against the men of Ammon and Moab and Mount Seir who were invading Judah, and they were defeated.” (2 Chronicles 20:22).
THE ARMOR OF GOD. Only a foolish or very lazy soldier would go into battle without his armor because he would not make it through any attack that came. Yet many Christian soldiers aren’t prepared as they start a day. They haven’t spent time in prayer or God’s Word. The armor in Ephesians 6:11-17 is designed for our protection when attacked and also enables us to go on the offensive to have victory. Learn what these weapons are and become expert at using them.
You are in a battle. If you put your faith in Jesus you have left Satan’s army and joined God’s army. Satan hates deserters and will do all he can to make you ineffective for Jesus. He can’t take away your salvation but he can take away your joy and peace – if you let him. God has provided all we need for victory. Learn how to use your weapons and always have them ready, for not a day goes by that you won’t need them. Only those who have surrendered to the enemy and are held prisoner by him no longer need or use their weapons. Never let that happen to you.
Ephesians 6:12 For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms.
