Protect Yourself From a Spiritual Attack – 2

In the previous blog we started looking at ways to protect ourselves when attacked and how to fight through to victory.  We saw 1) we must not be surprised that it is happening and 2) to use our God-given weapons.  We’ll look at 3 more key ingredients in this blog.

  1. IMMERSE YOURSELF IN GOD’S WORD. Since the key to victory or defeat is our mind, we must watch what thoughts we allow to take root in us. “The weapons we fight with are not the weapons of the world. On the contrary, they have divine power to demolish strongholds. We demolish arguments and every pretension that sets itself up against the knowledge of God, and we take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ.” (2 Corinthians 10:4-5)  We do this by spending time reading the Bible each day and meditating in it.  We keep our minds aligned with Divine Truth, not human fears or plans.  God knows we are no match for Satan on our own so He gave us His truth, promises and reassurance in the Bible.

We take every thought captive by comparing it to the truth of God’s Word.  Satan is a liar from the beginning, and is very good at it (John 8:44).  Ask Eve.  Read Scripture to protect yourself from his deception.  Meditate on it, mull it over in your mind as Mary did (Luke 2:19).  Don’t let your mind be so filled with music, movies or business that you don’t have time to think and ponder.  Memorize Scripture that speaks to weak areas in your life so your ‘sword of the Spirit’ is always nearby and ready when needed.

For example, God doesn’t throw darts of fear, worry, guilt, shame, lust or whatever our armor is most susceptible to.  God will never forsake us (Hebrews 13:5-6).  Fill your mind with God’s promises and truth so that when you or a loved one is attacked you are equipped to fight back with truth.  Satan tries to make it hard for us to read the Bible consistently and to consistently memorize Scripture.  The obstacles and hurdles in the way should remind you of its importance.  If it wasn’t a key to victory the flesh wouldn’t oppose it so much!

  1. PRAY PRAY PRAY PRAY. “The end of all things is near. Therefore, be alert and of sober mind so that you may pray.” (1 Peter 4:7) Jesus is a wonderful example of how to pray in all situations. He tells Peter, James, and John to pray so they will not fall into temptation while He prays to the Father.  “Watch and pray so that you will not fall into temptation. The spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak.” (Matthew 26:41)  Prayer is a critical part of our way to victory.  Our culture is so goal oriented and results focused that we don’t value prayer as we should.  We want to see ‘results’ so we put our time and energy into something with tangible outcomes.  Oswald Chambers correctly said, “Prayer isn’t preliminary to the battle, prayer is the battle.”  So, if we are defeated in prayer how can we expect to have victory for ourself or others?  Start and end each day praying for your family, loved ones, yourself and anyone God puts on your heart.
  2. HAVE GOOD CHRISTIAN FELLOWSHIP. Effective soldiers know how to work with others. No one can do it all, they need each other.  The same is true of Christian soldiers.  We need to surround ourselves with mature Christians who can help, encourage, teach and pray for us.  We need to do the same for them.  Regularly attend a Biblically-based church where the Bible is taught and servanthood is displayed is a must.  Invest your time, talent and treasure in that Body of Believers.  When you sense someone is struggling, encourage them and pray for them.  Ask them to do the same for you when you need it.  Don’t let your pride keep you from asking for prayer and help!  We are not meant to take on this world alone. God created the church so we could worship Him, be fed the Word of God each week, be reminded of the importance of repentance and be surrounded by other believers.  If we are left on our own, without the fellowship and nourishment of the church, we would all be in spiritual danger. We can become discouraged and weary.  If we aren’t constantly fed with the Word of God, we will drift. Being fed weekly is critical for our souls; it helps prepare us for what is to come.

The battle will not end as long as we live on this earth.  Instead of being discouraged by that, realize that it is only in this life that you can fight for Jesus, impact others for Him and grow to be more like Jesus.  Don’t miss any opportunity God brings your way to battle for yourself or others.  Don’t look at your problems and difficulties as something to defeat or discourage you, view them as opportunities for victory.  One day soon there will be no more battles.  Fight each one now as you will wish you would have when you look back on your life.  Now is the time to be alert and move ahead hand in hand with Jesus.

Psalm 108:13 – With God we shall do valiantly; it is he who will tread down our foes.

2 Corinthians 12:9-10 – But he said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” Therefore, I will boast all the more gladly of my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ may rest upon me. For the sake of Christ, then, I am content with weaknesses, insults, hardships, persecutions, and calamities. For when I am weak, then I am strong.

Romans 8:37 – No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through Him who loved us.

1 John 5:4 – For everyone who has been born of God overcomes the world. And this is the victory that has overcome the world—our faith.
