In our last blog we started looking at some of the sins that Jesus hates most. We talked about selfishness, pride, lack of faith, hypocrisy and greed. Here are some other sins that Jesus focused on in His life on earth.
UNFORGIVENESS: This is another sin we sometimes call by different names to excuse it. Jesus made it very clear that there are serious consequences of unforgiveness, even to the extent of God not forgiving us if we don’t forgive others (Matthew 6:14-15). He talked about an unforgiving servant in order to show the importance of forgiving others because God has forgiven us. (Matthew 18:21-35). Jesus is the ultimate example of the One who forgives. Though not deserving death, He forgave His enemies even while on the cross (Luke 23:34). And He forgave us for our part in putting Him on the cross. Are you quick to forgive others? Do you have unforgiveness toward someone in your heart? What would Jesus say about your forgiveness of others?
HATRED: Hatred is connected to unforgiveness. Jesus commanded His disciples over and over to love one another because it is a sign to the world that we are following Him (John 13:34-35). In fact, Jesus said that anger is as bad as murder (Matthew 5:21-26). Jesus wants us to live in unity. When we hate people Jesus loves we are doing just the opposite. Is there anyone you hate? Do you try to excuse it by saying you ‘dislike’ them? Would Jesus say there is a bit of hatred or anger in your heart toward anyone?
DISOBEDIENCE: Jesus continually encouraged his followers to obey Him because He knew that obedience was for their benefit (Luke 11:28; John 14:15). The parable of two sons illustrates the importance Jesus placed on obeying His word (Matthew 21:28-32). He doesn’t want partial obedience but total obedience in all things. Just because we are obeying in 90% of what we do doesn’t mean that we can disobey in the rest. Are you aware of any area of disobedience in your life? Would Jesus say there are any areas of disobedience in your life?
JUDGING OTHERS: Jesus came to the outcasts of society, the ones who were different and didn’t fit in, the ones who were hurting and needed help and the ones living in sin. He did not judge them as inferior but reached out to them in love and acceptance and they responded. The religious leaders criticized and rejected Jesus because of this. Jesus told them that it is not the healthy who needed a doctor, but rather the sick (Luke 5:27-31). Jesus strongly condemns looking down on anyone as inferior (Matthew 7:1-6; Luke 37-38). He is well aware of the sins and shortcomings of everyone but He does not consider anyone inferior or of less value because of them. We are not to put ourselves in the place of God and evaluate the worth or the guilt of another person. That is for God alone (James 4:12). We can evaluate behavior and recognize that which is not right, but we are still to love and rescue the person. Believers are called to show mercy towards one another rather than judgement. Are you guilty of judging others? Would Jesus say you are?
IMPURITY: The most dangerous sins are those which are hidden inside and cannot be seen by others, the sins of the heart. These include lust, greed, envy, slander, arrogance, deception and the like (Matthew 15:1-20; Mark 7:1-23). it is important for us to allow God to examine our hearts daily to ensure that we remain pure (Psalm 139:23-24). Is your heart pure or are there things there that shouldn’t be? What does Jesus see when He looks into your heart?
There are other sins we could include but these are some of the main ones that He condemns. It would be good if we could focus on them today as He did back then so His church would be free from all of these. We need to start with ourselves!
Psalm 139:23-24 Search me, God, and know my heart; test me and know my anxious thoughts. See if there is any offensive way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting.
Do you struggle with any of these sins? If so, confess any sin that hasn’t been confessed and ask God to help you have victory over the sin. Ask him make you alert of it from now on.
