INTRODUCTION

 

 

          Dr. Bill Bright of Campus Crusade for Christ tells this story of a famous oil field called Yates Pool:

During the depression this field was a sheep ranch owned by a man named Yates. Mr. Yates wasn’t able to make enough on his ranching operation to pay the principal and interest on the mortgage, so he was in danger of losing his ranch. With little money for clothes or food, his family (like many others) had to live on government subsidy.

Day after day, as he grazed his sheep over those rolling West Texas hills, he was no doubt greatly troubled about how he would pay his bills. Then a seismographic crew from an oil company came into the area and told him there might be oil on his land. They asked permission to drill a wildcat well, and he signed a lease contract.  At 1,115 feet they struck a huge oil reserve. The first well came in at 80,000 barrels a day. Many subsequent wells were more than twice as large. In fact, 30 years after the discovery, a government test of one of the wells showed it still had the potential flow of 125,000 barrels of oil a day.  And Mr. Yates owned it all. The day he purchased the land he had received the oil and mineral rights. Yet, he’d been living on relief. A multimillionaire living in poverty. The problem? He didn’t know the oil was there even though he owned it.

Many Christians live in spiritual poverty. They are entitled to the gifts of the Holy Spirit and his energizing power, but they are not aware of their birthright.

 

John 16:13  But when he, the Spirit of truth, comes, he will guide you into all truth. He will not speak on his own; he will speak only what he hears, and he will tell you what is yet to come.

It is said that a certain guide lived in the deserts of Arabia who never lost his way.  He carried with him a homing pigeonwith a very fine cord attached to one of its legs. 

 

SEALING

 

Eph 4:30  And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, with whom you were sealed for the day of redemption.

 

Seal = guarantee (ring in hot wax, like nortary public seal)

 

Holy Spirit is like the NOTARY PUBLIC.  He helps to guarantee the accuracy of the signature, and if necessary will testify in court.

HOLY SPIRIT SEALS US

When a piece of registered mailis mailed from a post office, it is sealed until delivered. Actually, only two persons can open registered mail – the sender (if it is returned to him) and the designated recipient.

Holy Spirit in us guarantees God signed our salvation with the blood of Jesus – eternally secure

 

“I give to them (Christians) eternal life and they shall never perish.  No one can snatch them out of my hand.  My father, who has given them to me, is greater than all; and no one is able to snatch them out of my father’s hand.”  John 10:28-9

            WE ARE SECURE BECAUSE:

            1. Christ our Shepherd responsible to care for us, get

                        us to heaven, that He’d fail a sheep blasphemy

            2. Sheep too dump to take care of self, resp on Shep

            3. “Eternal” life already a possession now

            4. “Given” – sheep just receive it unconditionally

            5. Jesus says we will “Never” perish, He doesn’t lie

                        “NEVER” = ou ma strongest Greek negative

            6. Secure in Christ’s hand, none can open it

                        “NO ONE” = Satan or man himself

In the book Healing the Masculine Soul, Gordon Dalbey says that when Jesus refers to the Holy Spirit as the Helper, he uses a Greek word, paraclete, that was an ancient warrior’s term. “Greek soldiers went into battle in pairs,” says Dalbey, “so when the enemy attacked, they could draw together back-to-back, covering each other’s blind side. One’s battle partner was the paraclete.” Our Lord does not send us to fight the good fight alone. The Holy Spirit is our battle partner who covers our blind side and fights for our well being.

 

            “Another” = Greek another of SAME kind (allos, not heteros)

            have HOLY SPIRIT in the free & unhindered exercise of all His attributes (knowledge,

                        power, holiness, peace, joy) over every realm of life.

Take a spongeand squeeze it.  In that condition, plunge it in water and submerge it, keeping it in there.  It is now in the water and the water is in it.  As you hold it in the water, you open your hand; and as you do so the water fills all the pores which you release in this way.  It is now filled with the water.  When we receive Christ we are born anew and put into that sphere where the Holy Spirit is operating and the Holy Spirit comes to reside in us!

grieve = Holy Spirit person, can be hurt, feel, emotions – by our sin (why does our sin hurt Him?

GRIEVE  = “to cause pain, or grief, to distress, grieve,”  

lupeo (loo-peh’-o); from NT:3077; to distress; reflexively or passively, to be sad:

 

“Grieve not the Holy Spirit of God” commands Paul. Now, only a dear friendcan be grieved. Not a stranger: he might be annoyed. Not a chance acquaintance: he might be perplexed. Not a business partner: he might be offended. Only a loved one can be grieved.

 

          Holy Spirit very sensitive to sin in our lives

                        -esp how we treat each other (context of Eph 4)

 

DON’T QUENCH

1 Thess 5:19  Do not put out the Spirit’s fire;

WALK BY THE SPIRIT

 

Walk by the Spirit, and you will not carry out the desires of the flesh.  Galatians 5:16

 

“Walk” = present tense, command  “Keep on continually walking”

            one step at a time under control of Holy Spirit

 

WALK BY THE SPIRIT = key phrase in NT @ our Christian life

 

To walk by the Spirit is to live with moment-by-moment dependency on and sensitivity to the initial promptings of the Holy Spirit.

 

 

 

 

GUIDANCE

 

bring a radio, turn on – receives unseen signals and converts to sound for us to hear.  HS does that with Bible, sends signals to us interpreting Bible

 

LISTEN to God!

 

I. WHAT DOES GOD’S VOICE SOUND LIKE?

 

A. Gentle Whisper (still, small voice)

 

1 Kings 19:11-13 The LORD said, “Go out and stand on the mountain in the presence of the LORD, for the LORD is about to pass by.”  Then a great and powerful wind tore the mountains apart and shattered the rocks before the LORD, but the LORD was not in the wind. After the wind there was an earthquake, but the LORD was not in the earthquake.

12 After the earthquake came a fire, but the LORD was not in the fire. And after the fire came a gentle whisper. 13 When Elijah heard it, he pulled his cloak over his face and went out and stood at the mouth of the cave.  Then a voice said to him, “What are you doing here, Elijah?”

Ps 39:1-3  I said, “I will watch my ways and keep my tongue from sin; I will put a muzzle on my mouth as long as the wicked are in my presence.” 2 But when I was silent and still, not even saying anything good, my anguish increased. 3 My heart grew hot within me, and as I meditated, the fire burned; then I spoke with my tongue:

 

 

 

II. WHAT DOES GOD’S VOICE SAY?

“these people have ears to hear but they never hear eyes to see, but they never see” (Ezekiel 12:2).

A. Conviction

John 16:7-11  When he comes, he will convict the world of guilt in regard to sin and righteousness and judgment: 9 in regard to sin, because men do not believe in me;

 

1 Thess 1:4-5  For we know, brothers loved by God, that he has chosen you, 5 because our gospel came to you not simply with words, but also with power, with the Holy Spirit and with deep conviction.

 

B. Information, Guidance

A. UNSETTLED SPIRIT

Esther 6:1  That night the king could not sleep; so he ordered the book of the chronicles, the record of his reign, to be brought in and read to him.

 

B. UNSOLICITED WORD FROM ANOTHER PERSON

2 Samuel 12:1  The LORD sent Nathan to David. When he came to him, he said, “There were two men in a certain town, one rich and the other poor.

 

C. UNUSUAL EVENT

 “For anyone who eats and drinks without recognizing the body of the Lord eats and drinks judgment on himself. 30 That is why many among you are weak and sick, and a number of you have fallen asleep.” – 1 Cor. 12. 29-30

Romans 2:4  Or do you show contempt for the riches of his kindness, tolerance and patience, not realizing that God’s kindness leads you toward repentance?

 

D. UNANSWERED PRAYER

sometimes have great need and heavens seem iron, no answer or help from God

makes us more desperate to hear, listen all the closer

 

 

IV. HOW CAN I TELL THE VOICE IS GOD’S AND NOT SATAN’S?

 

A. CHRIST CONVICTS – SATAN CONDEMNS 

Christ – feel guilty and sinful but loved anyway

Satan – feel guilty and sinful, also rejected by God

 

JESUS FORGIVES (focus on restoration)

John 8:10-11  Jesus straightened up and asked her, “Woman, where are they? Has no one condemned you?”  “No one, sir,” she said. “Then neither do I condemn you,” Jesus declared. “Go now and leave your life of sin.” 

 

SATAN ACCUSES (focus on the guilt) 

Revelation 12:10 Then I heard a loud voice in heaven say: “Now have come the salvation and the power and the kingdom of our God, and the authority of his Christ. For the accuser of our brothers, who accuses them before our God day and night, has been hurled down.

 

 

B. CHRIST CLARIFIES – SATAN CONFUSES

 

Christ – clearly see sin in its true, deadly light

   Takes away the deception and ‘pleasure’ of it

   Reveals deadliness, awfulness of the sin itself

1 Corinthians 13:11  When I was a child, I talked like a child, I thought like a child, I reasoned like a child. When I became a man, I put childish ways behind me. 

 

Satan – perplex us with worldly logic and explanations

   Wrong, but justifiable, not all that wrong, good reason for it… 

James 3:15  Such “wisdom” does not come down from heaven but is earthly, unspiritual, of the devil.

C. CHRIST CONFIRMS – SATAN CONTRADICTS 

 

Christ – ‘agree’ with what God telling us inside, Spirit agrees, what others have said agrees,

            Agrees with word of God

Phil 4:8-9  Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable-if anything is excellent or praiseworthy-think about such things. … And the God of peace will be with you.

 

Satan – doesn’t agree with Bible, advice of others, etc. 

            Blinded to it by own wanting it to happen

            Feel convinced we are an exception, can break God’s law for ‘spiritual’ reason

D. CHRIST CHOOSES – SATAN CAPTURES

 

Christ – brings us into freedom, no strings attached

            You shall know the truth and the truth shall set you free.

 

Satan – brings bondage, captures us, can’t let go, end up in bondage

2 Timothy 2:26  and that they will come to their senses and escape from the trap of the devil, who has taken them captive to do his will.

 

 

E. CHRIST CONSTRAINS – SATAN CONSTRICTS 

 

Christ – draws us for positive reason, love, etc

2 Corinthians 5:14  For Christ’s love compels us, because we are convinced that one died for all, and therefore all died.

 

Satan – constricts, limits, makes feel hopeless and ineffective, discourages

 

The seven questions

1 – Is it consistent with the word of God? Does this solution fit the principles that are in the Bible? Does it violate anything in the Bible?

2 – Is it a wise decision? In your own heart and mind is it the type of solution that Jesus Christ himself would agree with? Would Jesus implement this solution himself?

3 – Are you confident in asking God to enable you to achieve this solution? Can you look upon this solution as one that God would send into your life?

4 – Do you feel that it is a God given solution? Deep within your heart do you feel or sense that this solution is the will of God?

5 – Does this solution fit a child of God? From all that you know about God, does this solution or this answer fit a person that truly loves, believes, and trusts God?

6 – Does the solution fit God’s overall plan for your life? Does this solution fit in with God’s guidance and direction of your life?

7 – Does this solution honor God? Does it bring glory and praise to Almighty God?

 

SECURITY OF SALVATION

 

I. SEC OF SAL PROVED BY KEY PASSAGES

A. GOD’S FAITHFULNESS – II Tim 2:13

“It is a trustworthy statement: … If we are faithless, He remains faithful; for He cannot deny Himself.”

Keeping salvation is not dependent on our faithfulness to our promises, but God’s faithfulness to His promises.

            Bottom line is God, not man

B. GOD’S PROTECTION – Mt 12:20; Ps 37:24

“A battered reed He will not break off, and a smoldering wick He will not put out.”  Mt 12:20, quoting Isa 42:3

Shepherds played music on a reed or straw until it broke and was useless, then threw it away             and cut another

God, thru Isaiah, reminding the Jews He will be faithful to them even though they have been unfaithful to Him.

            Christ coming to earth proved that very point

            He came because God was faithful promises,

                        Not because the Jews faithful to theirs

“Though he fall, he shall not be utterly cast down; for the Lord upholds him with His hand.”  Psalm 37:24

            When Peter lost faith walking on the water, Jesus did not let him drown but rescued him

“Christ, who has begun a good work in you, will carry it on to completion as the day of Christ Jesus.”  Phil 1:6

C. GOD’S FORGIVENESS – Rom 4:1-12

“Blessed is the man whose sin the Lord will not take into account.”  Romans 4:1-12 (v. 8 here), quoting Psalm 32:2  About David and sin with BatHoly Spiritheba.  David should have been stoned to death for adultery and murder, for sure would have lost salvation.  David’s testimony is that God does not take his salvation or hold the sin against him eternally

 

D. STEADFASTNESS – Jn 10:28; Rom 8:37-39

“In all these thins we are more than conquerors through Him who loved us, For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.” Rom 8:37-9

            Nothing can separate a believer from God

                        Not Satan or demons

                        Not any event on earth

                        Not even man’s free will giving back salv.
