Main idea: the cost of salvation shows how valuable we are to God
Magic: Change bag – much money in, picture of me out
INTRODUCTION
WHAT IS MOST IMPORTANT TO US:
If I could look at your checkbook and credit card statements I could learn a lot about you
-your spending habits
-your tastes and interests
-what is most important to you = we spend our money on what is most important to us
The more money you are willing to pay for something the more valuable to you
US: car for Grace to drive costly, very safe
If I could look at a record of how you spend your time day after day I could learn a lot about you
-what is important, and not important
-your interests
-what is most important to you
MARK basketball playoffs every night
Our most precious, limited commodities show what is most important to us, use of
-money
-time
What is of highest value to you?
Where does most of your free money and free time go?
What would you be willing to spend most off your time &
money for?
WHAT IS MOST IMPORTANT TO GOD:
He has no limited resources, but does have precious possessions
What does He talk about over and over and over?
What does He give His most valuable possession for?
We’re going to see that in the book of Exodus this morning..
TRANSITION
GENESIS perfect, man with God, then sin and into bondage in Egypt
EXODUS 12-13
I. JUDGMENT ON UNBELIEF Ex 7-10
Does not go quickly or smoothly!
Moses to Jews, then Pharaoh
10 PLAGUES
1. Water to blood (Nile)
2. Frogs (Nile)
3. Lice (insects)
4. Swarms (insects)
5. Disease on animals
6. disease (boils on animals & men
7. Hail destroy crops
8. Locusts destroy crops
9. Darkness everywhere
10. Death of firstborn everywhere
Each one takes on a particular god or group of gods Egyptians worship
Pharaoh repents under pressure, but hardens heart when pressure gone!
Whole thing takes one year
II. PRICE OF REDEMPTION Ex 11-12
START TO SEE WHAT IS OF VALUE TO GOD
What He is willing to pay the ultimate price for
a. START OF ANIMAL SACRIFICES – EDEN
Adam and Eve – innocent blood shed by ‘Jesus’ to cover sin
Adam, Able, Noah, Job = innocent animal sacrifices
Unbelievers copied, counterfeited it
Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, Joseph = sacrificed
Isaac picture of Jesus on altar, ram substitute
FIRST OCCURRENCE OF “LAMB” Gen 22:7-8 substitute for Isaac
b. DEVELOPMENT of SACRIFICES – PASSOVER
How much we are willing to pay for something shows how much it is worth to us
What God was willing to pay shows what is most
important to His heart
Exodus 12:1-5 The Lord said to Moses and Aaron in Egypt, “This is to be for you the first month, the first month of your year.
Tell the whole community of Israel that on the tenth day of this month each man is to take a lamb for his family, one for each household.
If any household is too small for a whole lamb, they must share one with their nearest neighbor, having taken into account the number of people there are.
You are to determine the amount of lamb needed in accordance with what each person will eat.
The animals you choose must be year-old males without defect, and you may take them from the sheep or the goats.
LAMB CHOSEN (12:3,5b) fl lambs, (stuffed lamb AV)
Lamb (innocent, gentle, meek, dependent)
Unblemished (perfect, spotless)
Male – strength, energy (Christ)
1 yr old, prime of life, not old, tough
Exodus 12:6 Take care of them until the fourteenth day of the month, when all the people of the community of Israel must slaughter them at twilight.
LAMB KILLED (12:6A)
Live lamb did no good, had to die
Die only once – Jesus “It is finished”
Picked 10 Nisan – set aside to make sure sinless
Killed 14 Nisan
Substitute, hands placed on animal, sin confessed.
Killed by all, ones doing it represent all
Individual responsibility – each agree to it inside
Jesus in public view 3 yrs to make sure sinless
14 Nisan 1441 (Jesus died 14 Nisan AD 33)
Died 3 PM, same time as Jesus on Cross
DEATH:
Necessary: life only condemns, only death saves
Wasteful: all sin wasteful
Salvation FREE for us, COSTLY for Jesus!
Substitute: hands laid on, sins confessed (Identify)
No bones broken: usually ate marrow!
Innocent blood shed because of sin
Adam & Eve in Eden, and on
Tabernacle, temple
Jesus fulfilled it, ended it (VEIL torn!)
When Jews didn’t stop, God stopped it 70 AD
What price was God willing to pay for us?
What does that show about our worth to Him?
Exodus 12:7 Then they are to take some of the blood and put it on the sides and tops of the door frames of the houses where they eat the lambs.
SEE WHAT IS OF VALUE TO GOD
What He is willing to pay the ultimate price for
LAMB’S BLOOD (12:7)
Pictures Jesus’ blood shed for us
Must be applied, no good in lamb or shed & ignored
Not just any blood – divinely appointed victim
Not jewels, gold, $, good works, only blood
Free will choice
“Atonement” = “to cover”
Onto doorposts – public testimony, stand
By person in the house – personal involvement
Top, Sides – shape of a cross! (JRS MODEL)
Safe inside – firstborn not die inside
After painted, ENTER house (“through the blood”)
Without the shedding of blood there is no remission of sins”
Remission = remove debt Hebrew 9:27
No pardon/remission without blood
Our good works:
Isaiah – like filthy rags (menstrual rags)
Paul (Phil. 3:8) like rubbish (dung heap)
Blood alone: not added to any of the above, either
Blood sufficient: “When I see the blood I WILL pass over” Promise
Only condition: God must SEE the blood (man couldn’t see)
“SIGN” Distinguishing sign – Jews – Egyptians
Sign to angels, demons as well
Assuring sign – security, acceptance (“brand”)
Significant sign – sign suffering took place
substitute accepted
Blood = JESUS’ BLOOD
We have redemption through Christ’s blood. Eph 1:7
The blood of Jesus Christ God’s Son cleanses us from all sin. I John 1:7
…but with the precious blood as of a lamb, unblemished and spotless, the blood of Christ. I Peter 1:19
at Last Supper: “This is My blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many for forgiveness of sins.” Mt 26:28
and not through the blood of goats and calves but through His own blood He entered the holy place once for all, having obtained eternal redemption. Heb 9:12
to Him who loves us, and released us from our sins by His blood. Rev. 1:5b
But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us. Much more, then, having now been justified by His blood, we shall be saved from the wrath of God through Him Rom 5:8-9
Had to stay inside all night – only safe under blood
Outside = death Inside = Life
Jews as deserving of death as Egyptians!
Only the innocent lambs blood saved them
Exodus 12:8-11 That same night they are to eat the meat roasted over the fire, along with bitter herbs, and bread made without yeast.
Do not eat the mean raw or cooked in water, but roast it over the fire — head, legs and inner parts.
Do not leave any of it till morning; if some is left till morning, you must burn it.
This is how you are to eat it: with your cloak tucked into your belt, your sandals on your feet and your staff in your hand. Eat ir in haste; it is the Lord’s Passover.
LAMB’S BODY (12:8-10, 46)
Eaten – Not kill & look at it, but personally identify w/ it
Nourishment, sustenance for life, strength
Same night – can’t put off partaking
Nothing left over (or decay) – Christ didn’t decay
Roasted – lamb faced death, fire
Not raw – had to go through fire (hell judgment)
Jesus face death and hell for us
Not boiled – no water to slacken Jesus’ thirst
All of it – entire, total surrender, partaking (fresh each day)
No bones broken (eat marrow), prophesied Ps 34:20
BODY EATEN = NOURISHMENT
Us from Jesus, Word of God
Exodus 12:11b-12 Eat it in haste; it is the Lord’s Passover. On that same night I will pass through Egypt and strike down every firstborn — both men and animals — and I will bring judgment on all the gods of Egypt. I am the LORD.
“Pass Over” – angel of death saw blood, passed over
Heb ‘pacach’ = “pass over” – not stop & kill
Exodus 12:13 The blood will be a sign for you on the houses where you are; and when I see the blood, I will pass over you. No destructive plague will touch you when I strike Egypt.
